On Museum Archives day we are proud to announce the CLP Pulse Museum was officially opened to the community of Hong Kong.
We won this project, back in 2019 in an international pitch , as Lead design consultant and have been working hard for the last 3 and a half years.
Carrying out a project like this throughout the pandemic has been no easy task and I personally want to thank my whole team, here at Sugar, Paul Chan and John Wong at Wong & Ouyan Building Services, SteensenVarming and Fergus from Choi Comer Asia for a great project.
We developed over 2000 sqm of space from a bare shell, working on Winkle Pickers (Dr Chris White) Interpretative plan. We challenged the norm and introduced an energy saving (up to 50% which is huge considering the amount of energy the split unit types use here in Hong Kong) Radiant chilled ceiling panel system in all areas (except the museum archive strong room) and reached the achievement of LEED Platinum.
We strived for every gallery to have its own identity, harmoniously blended through the content, diversification across the AV Hardware and bringing a 5th Generation Peak Tram to the Garden area - an amazing feat of intricacy from DB Shenker to crane it into place in the dead of night from Kadoorie Avenue. An Immersive area and fully 3D printed models all brought the content to life and a beautiful redesign of the boardroom inside the clocktower itself topped the roof floor. It has been an amazing journey with many stories...lots will follow.
It has been challenging, in this regenerated beautiful 1930’s iconic building which captures so many memories for the people here in Hong Kong and the client team worked tirelessly to support us and we them.
We wish it well for the future…
This History Wall celebrates the bank’s history in its refurbished offices in Shanghai, China. We carried out 2 designs for the shanghai office, one history wall on the 32nd floor and one on the 22nd floor. The 32 floor was the main Global story nand the 22nd floor was a more china centric focused story featuring the dragon from the façade of the main HSBC building in HK.
Sugar was appointed as the lead design team working with Singapore based STE and CEC in Singapore acting as management and cost control.
Hong Kong News-Expo is a museum dedicated to the history and significance of the news media in Hong Kong. It is housed inside the former Bridges Street Market at No. 2, Bridges Street in Central District, Hong Kong Island. The heritage building was among the first batch of public markets built after the end of World War II and was opened in 1953. The building sits partly on the former site of the American Congregational Mission Preaching Hall, where Dr Sun Yat-sen, founder of the Republic of China, was baptised in 1884. In 2013, under Batch III of the Revitalising Historic Buildings Through Partnership Scheme, the Journalism Education Foundation Hong Kong Limited was granted the right to revitalise the property into Asia’s first education facility with news as the main theme.
The market’s main staircase, poultry scalding room and several market stores of historical significance have been preserved. A new lift has been built to provide barrier-free access to the adjacent streets. The playground on the first floor of the market was remodeled into an exhibition and multi-purpose area.
The museum was officially opened by Mrs Carrie Lam, Chief executive of HKSAR.
We are proud to continue to assist and help the museum.

In the heart of Ho Chi Minh’s district 1 just off the famous ‘Walking street’, Sugar’s Saigon Garden project defines huge revitalisation and growth. The economic optimism of the region is captured in this experience and projects the future of Vietnam. AKR’s show suite harmonises exciting, dynamic and unique technology to distil the client’s vision. This series of 5 spaces interlinked with public areas was challenging but the final execution was qualitative and impressive.
The vibrancy and energy of this project revolutionises the space. We invite users to explore and engage, challenging them with interactive innovative media on the outer skin to bold audio-visual statements and distinct and richly layered graphics underpin the narrative. We are currently developing other projects in Vietnam.
Between the public area and first area we worked with NEXNOVO TECHNOLOGY CO. HSBC’s second Wealth Management Centre at Hysan Place, Causeway Bay, provides high-net-worth clients with a series of leading and digital wealth management solutions.
A major feature of the space is a unique digital experience entitled ‘Threads of Life’ evocatively embodying the values of HSBC’s Wealth Centre’s service inspired by the magnificent silk tapestry held by the HSBC Archives presented to Sir Thomas Jackson by Chinese merchants in 1902. The digital animation fully utilises the two screens within the Hysan Place Wealth Centre, sometimes in concert, sometimes independently. Another part of this experience is the Heritage Corridor, almost like a mini museum, that exhibits a collection of old banknotes, photos and documents of great historic value, a testament to the long history of HSBC in Hong Kong.
This recently completed heritage Wall in Düsseldorf celebrates the bank’s German history with a timeline and montage graphic wall.

Objects on display from the Archives (in which it is located) include the founding documents of the bank, paintings by the renowned China Trade artist George Chinnery, original and rare bank notes and printing plates issued throughout the bank’s history and spheres of influence, even silver ingots from Imperial China and a 3,000-year old “knife coin”. We were asked by HSBC to look at how we could utilise the Archive to create a special moment for visitors to this high net wealth floor. Our response was to take the beautiful tapestry, which was given to Sir Thomas Jackson in 1902 and to separate and layer the key features and moments of the work into a bespoke piece of art. This unfortunately never went ahead.

HSBC’s Wealth Centre K11 is the first of its kind that combines wealth management, insurance and medical check-up services into a one-stop shop, as part of its broader effort to capture more ultra-wealthy customers in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area (GBA). We conceived the concept of the beautiful Tapestry gifted to Sir Thomas Jackson by Chinese Merchants in 1902 coming to life with all the beautiful stitching and thread colours telling the story in a stunning animation with interactivity for all the guests to experience as well as a small heritage wall corridor. The focus here was the crane and the links to water.

传统
In its formative years Sugar’s Creative Director also designed and executed many heritage based projects across Scotland and Europe, from the Royal Scot’s Dragoon Guards Museum in Edinburgh Castle to The Scottish Crown Jewels Exhibition - All of these relied upon thorough research and engaging ways to design them without the reliance on technology, this all allowed a huge amount of knowledge to be gained which is still used today with treatments and different ways of looking at projects.
A project from our archives: An exhibition on the artist L. S. Lowry. Capturing the conditions of working-class Victorian Britain, Lowry’s ‘Matchstick Men’ celebrate a generation and industrious landscape which is fast disappearing.
Following on from our successful Seria Energy Lab project working with Hypsos Leisure Asia, we were asked to pitch for a project for The Oil & Gas Experience in the Old Custom’s House, in Bandar Seri Begawan for a world class visitor destination for local and international tourists. It told the compelling story of Brunei’s treasury of natural resources and how these have been carefully and innovatively explored and harnessed to build a nation.
With its prime location on the Brunei River with commanding views of the stilted houses of Kampong Ayer, this new museum was planned to become a must-see cultural highlight and a benchmark of quality for the strategic development of educational venues in Brunei. It will be particularly important in instilling a sense of wonder and pride in the young generation of Bruneians to prepare them for the challenges of the country’s future development.
